How to install Windows SBS 2011 Premium Add On!

    • ronnypot says:

I haven’t installed premium add-on yet, but you should have get additional media with Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. Just insert the windows server disk and follow the instructions. When ready and you would install SQL server insert the disk and follow the instructions.

You know, I have been using your guides to help me setup my small office server using SBS 2011 Standard, and you have been a great help! I just want to say thanks.

  5. Mahmut says:

Thanks for your clear step by step instructions. It helped me a lot since i am kinda new to such systems.

    Hi Ronny,
    Great Walktrough…
I read you havn’t installed the premium add-on but as you seem to know much on the sbs 2011 system i was wondering if you know if the premium add-on installation requires to be online at the first server’s location or can I do it off site and connect it after the installation finishes.

Any Info or redirection would be very helpful.
    Regards
    Yaniv.

    Hi Ronny,

Since I haven’t heard from you for some time I can only assume that you have been extremely busy. I also hope that your daughter is better again and that you have recovered from your own illness.

I am writing to you because my WinSBS 2011 STD is still giving me a hard time! Have most of the issues sorted out one by one over the past four weeks and the client is now working with the server but I have an issue connecting remotely to it for either the web apps or for the OWA. There is the initial issue with the address translation to see the server from the outside through a router. Have used DynDNS via my Cisco E2000 router which has the occasional hiccup. Was wondering if there is more information somewhere on all the ports required to forward on the router from the public IP of the router to my local server IP. Also, would like to involve share-point but I am not sure if that will work since my SBS doesn’t have its own public IP. With a more sophisticated router I could probably point a public IP to the local server IP but the Cisco E2000 does provide me with NAT services only.

Another issue is with the DNS configuration in order to have my SBS take information from an external public DNS. Failing that configuration so far I had no choice but to use the hosts file to add my SMTP hub server which worked but isn’t clean and I ended up having to use the IP address from my SMTP server instead of its name to make the mail sending/forwarding work.

Most of those issues are interrelated but it is a very time consuming task and even Microsoft must have a hard time because in no other product of theirs have I seen critical updates popping up in such a high frequency.

Would be really happy and grateful if you could point me to some more detailed information on the aforementioned issues.

    Thank you and best regards,
    Wolfgang

    hi,

does sbs 2011 essentials edition contain exchange 2010 within itself. or do we need to install it manually after SBS installation.

    Thank you

    • ronnypot says:

      Hi,

Sbs 2011 essentials does not include an on premise exchange or sharepoint. You also cannot install exchange. Sbs essentials has an option to attach it to a hosted solution like office 365.

    Thanks for the great site,
    But i have a problem.
after installing sbs 2011 Standard, i have created 2 standard user accounts on the server, but i can not use them. not from a computer connected to the server or through the web (remote….) or through outlook web access.
The only account i can use is the account that i use for installing the server. Did i missed something?

    Regards Bert Berrevoets

    • ronnypot says:

      thanks!

I have some questions to start: Is this a migration from a older SBS version? If this is any errors? Did you ran all SBS wizards before creating the user accounts? How did you create the user accounts, AD users and computers, exchange or the SBS console?

  14. Lee says:

Thanks so much for this resource… I tried adding the RRAS role to my server and everything stopped working… a full rebuild is required 🙁 i have printed off your install guide for reference.

    Much appreciated

    • ronnypot says:

It is recommended not to change any roles on your SBS server because everything in a SBS server is bound to each other and changing one setting will kill more. As far as I know the RRAS role is by default installed so what would you like to achieve?

  15. Sreejith says:

can somebody help me out in installing windows exchange in sbs 2011?

    • ronnypot says:

can you clarify your question, because when you install SBS 2011 and configure it with the wizards Exchange is installed and configured for you.

  16. Dylan says:

    Hi

We are having an issue with our SBS 2011 Server, whereby every so many days it wont be accessible and cant remote onto it or do anything on the local server. We then have to do a force reboot and then it comes up again, the issue is i cant find any cause of the problem in the event viewer and cant explain it, it also happens at random, sometimes it will last a week other times 2-3 days.

    Any insight would assist

    • ronnypot says:

Sorry I have no clue why this could happen, maybe any third party anti-virus or other program that freezes the server. I would start removing anti-virus software and see what happens.

  17. Eddie says:

Hi, love this, just what I needed.

I’ve read most of where I think what I am looking for would be and can’t find it. Although just after the holidays, surprised I can find my work place.

My wifes brother in law has installed SBS2011 and as I am family have been roped in.

We have gone through the wizards and seem to have everything working ok apart from when Mail comes in, it goes to one account only, no matter who it is addressed from. Although if somone sends an e-mail the DR and RR come back to the sender.

It’s a pain not being able to find where to get mail delivered to individuals mail boxes, any pointers where I am obviously going dippy over

    • ronnypot says:

      Hi,

Are you using the POP3 connector to pull the mail to your server or is mail delivered direct to your server via SMTP?

  18. Jamal says:

I have a western Digital My Book 2 TB network hard drive for the purpose of Backup.
How do I configure it as a backup drive in SBS 2011 Std
is it advisable to use this or do I get a raid controller and fix HDs to it

  19. Jamal says:

    Hi Ronny,

I have installed SBS2011 and configured it using your detailed guide and everything is working fine.

I have another WIN2K server which is connected to this network as a client.

I have shared a folder in the WIN2K server and I have given full access to everyone for it.

The problem is I am unable to access this shared folder of the Win2K server from the SBS2011 server or any other client. I am able to remotely connect from the SBS2011 server to the win2K server, but I am unable to view the folders or map it.

Is it something to do with some service which has not been started?
Could you please help me out.

    • ronnypot says:

Is it right this is a windows 2000 server (because that is what win2k stands for) or is it any newer version.

Ofcourse a share on an additional server should be reachable, did you attach the server to the domain using the http://connect site?

  20. C. Pownall says:

    Great post
Allowed us to do a remote SBS 2011 install with an end user on the phone without flaw. Saved us the time setting up a virtual and walking through the install.

Thanks for taking the time to do this and post it.

is it possible to merge the contacts from public folder to the global address book

    • ronnypot says:

the global address list is generated accounts from your AD so no contacts. Ofcourse you can add a contacts folder to your outlook address books, by doing properties on the contact folder and select the outlook address book tab and enable show this folder as an e-mail address book.

  22. chris says:

Sorry had to repost used the incorrect email address……
I recently moved from SBS2003 to SBS2011. I am battling to setup exchange. Previously I was on a pop3 account and have since moved to email spooling. I am able to send out emails to various external email addresses so I am assuming that is fine as they recieve them. When they click reply the emails do not get to me.

Checked the firewall is opening for port 25 on the server.

UpnP is turned on on the router and I can see the servers ip address and ports 80,25,443 and 987 are registered.

I am using a dyndns record to keep my ip address bound to a name. I can ping that from the server and it resolves. I can ping the mail.yourdomainname.co.za and this resolves.

I have a feeling that the recieve connector is setup incorrectly. I have deleted all except the Windows SBS internet connector.

Microsoft test analyser reports the following

The 2 MX records come back fine

The mail.yourdomain.co.za comes back fine from a dns view

Testing TCP port 25 on host mail.yourdomain.co.za to ensure it’s listening and open. and it fails here with The specified port is either blocked, not listening, or not producing the expected response.

What else do I have well I have a user name and password from the service provider. I am not sure where to configure this. My server domain name is different to the email address domain name.

is it possible to enable email auditing in sbs 2011?

    • ronnypot says:

      Hi,

SBS 2011 is a combination of Windows Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010, so you can just use the standard auditing that are available for those products.

  24. david says:

is there any risk to updating optional updates sbs 2011?
we are using exchange.i read somewhere a while back a certain update would messup exchange.
