Windows Small Business Server 2011 installation and configuration – part 2 configuring “Connect to the internet” wizard
Go directly to SBS 2011 index file. With links to all articles from this serie.
When you finished installation as in part 1 you choose “Start using the server” or when you closed this window you can start the Windows SBS console icon on the desktop.
You will now see the main screen of your Windows Small Business Server Console, this is the central place where you can control, configure, monitor, etc. most tasks for your SBS environment.
First I will go to some basic configuration wizards, starting with the Connect to the Internet wizard.
This wizard will check your network configuration and if there is an internet connection available. This wizard will also configure a default DHCP scope and the DNS server to use root hints.
When you continue it will start a network scan to automatically detect your network settings and existing router.
When another device on your network had enabled a DHCP server you will get this error. You have to disable or disconnect the other DHCP server to continue the wizard.
When everything is right connected you will get this screen. If these settings are not right you can change them manually.
When no router could be detected you will receive this message.
Now it will do a DNS query to www.microsoft.com through root hints. When query fails you will get a message to manually configure your router and run the Test again. You will have to run the Test once, if it still fails you get a option to continue without running the Test.
When everything runs fine you have successfully completed the Connect to the Internet Wizard.
Choose Finish and you will return to the SBS Console. Place a check mark behind the connect to the internet option so you know you have finished the command.

I get this screen;
“Can not find the local network” something about my router not being detected, but I am sure there is a router present.
I tried several times but the setup doesn’t let me go on without this step?
Did you ever find the reason for this? I’m experiencing the same thing.
Have you plugged in the network cable in the lights out / remote management port or the network port?
I cannot connect to the https://remote.companyname.com from outside the network. Can you give me an example of DNS records that need to listed on my ISP’s DNS Server?
You should create in your external DNS server for your domain an A record with the name remote and as value the external ip address of your router.
Beside that your router / firewall should allow port 443 and translate it to your SBS server. You could test this by using telnet to port 443 from outside of your network, the command is like this: telnet external ip address 443
is it safe to connect to internet without having any antivirus installed or better to install antivirus prior to connecting to the internet or does the sbs 2011 std has a builtin protection
There is no built in solution for anti-virus with SBS 2011. Is it safe? It depends on what you are going to do ofcourse, by default there is a firewall enabled which may block some incoming traffic so you are not completely unprotected.

Which AV would you recommend for the server protection, preferably with MS Exchange protection.
AV is a real personal thing, one likes product x other loves product y. We use Avira anti-virus products because of there low system resource usage, we have good results.
Before you choose make sure the product you choose is supported on your SBS version because not all products are at the moment, some won’t do SBS at all.

On antoher topic, i am unable to connect to ms exchange server when i open MS Exchange Management Console. it says, connecting to server failed ..svr.mydomain.local. The Win RM client cannot process the request. it talks about authontication method. Pls if you can throw some lights on this.
I have seen some kind of error. In my case restating IIS (start command prompt and run iisreset) solved the problem, but there are different similar error messages. Otherwise please post the exact error message this might help finding the solution
when i run iisreset, it says access denied. you must be administrator of the remote computer to use this command. either have your account added to the administrator local group of the remote computer or to the domain administrator of the global group. (BTW i have logged in as administrator of the domain, i dont know where else i need to give the rights.)
you probably need to right click the command prompt shortcut and choose run as administrator.

[domainsvr.domain.local] connecting to the remote server failed wiht the following error message. The WinRM client cannot process the request. The WinRM tried to use kerbos authentication mechanism, but the destination computer (domainsvr.domain.loc al:80) returned an access denied error. change the configuration to allow kerberos authentication mechanism to be used or specify one of the authentication mechanisms supported by the server. to use kerberos, specify the local computer name as the remote destination. also verifiy that the client computer and the destination computer are joined to a domain. to use basic, specify the computer name as the remote destination, specify Basic authentication and provide user name and password. possible authentication mechanism reported by server:for more informaiton, see the about_remote_troubleshooting help topic. it was running the command ‘Discover-ExchangeServer -UseWIA $true -SuppressError $true -CurrentVersion ‘Version 14.1 (Build 218.15)”

How can I configure “Connect to the internet” wizard if I use DHCP on the router.
My SBS 2011 is located in data-center, user in the office use ISP provider and DHCP on the router, I do not need to install DHCP on the SBS server, but when I run “Connect to the internet” wizard in data-center I got error that DHCP already exist in the network (probably on switch in data-center) .

The wizard insists to have the DHCP on the server during the configuration, after that you can disable the DHCP service as you like.

If i run the “Connect to the internet Connnection” Wizzard on a Windows 2011 SBS i get the Error Message “Your internet connection is incomplete.
Your E-Mail couldn´t be configured properly throu the SBS Server. Please redo the Assisstant to solve the problem” (I´ve translated it from a german version). If i redo the assisstant the same error occurs. The internet connection works flawles if i configure it manually. Do you have an idea what the problem could be.

I don’t know this error but, you might find your answer in reviewing the log files, the SBS log files are all stored in this folder: C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Logs and the log file for the Connect to the Internet wizard is CTIW.log. Maybe this will help.
We’ve been using SBS 2003 successfully for many years, which has provided our small business with excellent facilities like remote access and SMTP Exchange email that we now couldn’t manage without. We are preparing an upgrade to SBS2011 through a clean install rather than migration, and I’ve made good use of the articles published here, so thank you.
However, I’m really confused as to how we manage the change from two NICs to one. Our existing (NO-NAT) router carries a public IP address of xxx.xxx. 120.177 and is connected to the second (external) NIC that has a public address of xxx.xxx.120.180 (matching the MX record, for SMTP mail and remote access). As I see it, we need to change to a NAT router so that the server can see the router as a local address, but without the second NIC, how do we provide for the MX record IP address? Does it just become another translated address on the router? Any guidance would be most welcome.

It is indeed that your router holds the public ip address and it needs to passthrough the smtp port (25) to the private ip address of the SBS server.

So when I configure the NAT router, do I configure it as having two external (public) IP addresses – one for the router itself (xxx.xxx.120.177), and another (perhaps an alias) for the MX record (xxx.xxx.120.180)? Or do I need only one of these?
It should work with just one ip address but you can also use 2 if you like.
doing an install a fresh install of SBS 2011 next month..(kinda nervous) but ready to perform install.
Question on DHCP.
how can i verify if DHCP is enable and disable on my SBS 2003??? is it still a requirement to disable DHCP on SBS 2003?

Just start the DHCP manager and see if there is a scope and see if it is activated. Probably when you start DHCP manager on SBS 2003 you won’t see anything because the DHCP service is disabled.
Hi.
I have had a problem all weekend, We did have a SBS2003 server with two NIC’s and during setup it asked for which NIC was connected to the Internet and to enter the IP address, and which NIC was connected to our LAN and to specify the IP range, which all worked great.
Now, We have just fitted a SBS2011 with two NIC’s, I have the first NIC connected to the internet modem and entered the static IP address and the server works well on the internet, we can access our files and databases. The other NIC is connected to our switch in the back office, but no other computer can access the internet, unlike before with the SBS2003.
Can anybody please give me some advice on how to remedy this problem?

Hi Paul,
With SBS 2003 they indeed supported a 2 nic configuration but with SBS 2008 and 2011 they only support a 1 nic configuration every other nic will be disabled during setup. Or if you enable afterwards you will get all kind of network issues. See this blog post for the supported network topology
hey, when i try to get into my website (https://remote.eimessenger.co.nz) it comes up as “this connection is untrusted” we did the certification part . can you guys help on how to resolve this issue.

Are you using a trusted third party certificate or just a self signed? If it is a self-signed you need to import the certificate on the local computers where you would like to access the page.
FYI – you can get around the DHCP check issue by setting a registry key while doing the wizard:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SmallBusinessServer\networking
DWORD SkipDHCPConfig = 1
Once you are done you can remove the key and configure your DHCP later down the track.
is it possible to migrate from server 2003 to sbs 2011?
if i am changing domain names is it necessary to migrate?
if i dont migrate does it mean i just need recreate user accounts?
the server 2003 does not have exchange.
i would like to start using it.if i use pop3 do i still need a certificate?
Sure you can migrate sbs 2003 to 2011 there is great information http://technet.microsoft.com/nl-nl/library/gg563801.aspx. Also a lot of tips on my site look arround.
You can’t change domain names during migration so if you need to change the domain name you have to start over with a clean install. When you start over recreate the accounts, you need to reset security information on all files and shares. But most work is you need to reattach all workstation to the new domain and create new usr profiles for all users.

Running SBS2011. every time I reboot the server I need to run the (CTIW) Connect to internet wizard. If I don’t I cannot browse the internet on the server or any clients also no exchange email. Running through the wizard set everything up fin but it’s very annoying as I’m not always on site when the server reboots. This has started since a recent restore from backup. Any Ideas on what might be casing this? Why don’t SBS2011 hold the settings? We have a DSL cable modem and a clearOS firewall running in front of this server.
